GM to Produce 30,000 Ventilators under Defense Production Act Contract

General Motors will produce 30,000 ventilators under a $500 million contract signed as a result of the Defense Production Act.

According to The Hill:

The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) on Wednesday announced a $500 million contract with General Motors under the Defense Production Act (DPA) to deliver 30,000 ventilators to the Strategic National Stockpile by August.

President Trump said last month that he’d use the powerful Korean War-era law to compel GM to help the federal government address a surge in hospitalizations stemming from the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the U.S.

The new contract between HHS and the automaker includes a production schedule in which more than 6,000 ventilators will be transported to the national stockpile by June 1, HHS said. A total of 30,000 ventilators will be manufactured and shipped to the stockpile by the end of August.

It is unclear how many ventilators will be shipped to the stockpile each month until the end of August.

This is the first federal contract for ventilator production under the act.

Really? $500,000,000 for ONLY 30,000 ventilators? That’s $16,666.67 for EACH ventilator! Come on President Trump, I thought you could get a better deal than that! Perhaps you should have approached non-union manufacturers to do the work, I would bet they could manufacture effective ventilators for under $8,000 each!

I SURELY HOPE-that if GM-‘accepted ‘that HUGE ORDER-it was because they know they can fulfill it! I also hope-that NO PARTS SHOULD BE ‘PURCHASED’ FROM CHINA! ALL ‘PARTS’-MUST BE AMERICAN! AFTER WHAT CHINA DID TO THE WORLD-NO COUNTRY SHOULD EVER-EVER-EVER-PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM ‘THEM’-EVER!

16,666 price per unit. Probably get them imported for less than 5000 and the rest is profit and overhead. Not a bad deal for a company that cannot sell too many automobiles at the present,
Wonder! how much is GM manegement contained in the overhead?
