Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer Will Retire This Year

Liberal Justice Stephen Breyer announced his intention to retire at the end of the current Supreme Court term. He has served over two decades on the bench after being nominated by former President Bill Clinton in 1994. His retirement gives President Joe Biden his first opportunity to fill a Supreme Court position. Biden pledged to name a black woman if given the opportunity while campaigning for President. Democrats in Congress have called on him to fulfil that oath since Breyer made the announcement this afternoon.

U.S. Circuit Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is seen as a top candidate for Breyer’s replacement. It was Biden who elevated her to the Circuit Court of Appeals for DC last year, from which Supreme Court Justices are commonly chosen.

According to NBC News:

Jackson, a Harvard Law graduate, was confirmed to the D.C. Circuit in June by a vote of 53-44, with the support of all 50 Democrats and three Republicans: Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Democrats need only 50 Senate votes to confirm a new justice, and the recent record of party unity in favor of Jackson could work in her favor when the White House considers its options. She was already seen as a future Supreme Court prospect when the Senate voted on her nomination in June, and Republicans were unable to generate enough controversy to sink her nomination.

Jackson checks a number of boxes important to the Democratic Party and progressive movement. At 51, she’s young enough to hold the seat for decades. She has a background as a public defender and worked on the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Her labor-friendly rulings as a judge have drawn praise.

She has also clerked on the Supreme Court, including for Breyer.

Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) used the occasion to remind Republican voters: “If all Democrats hang together – which I expect they will – they have the power to replace Justice Breyer in 2022 without one Republican vote in support. Elections have consequences, and that is most evident when it comes to fulfilling vacancies on the Supreme Court.”

This is GREAT if you are a Republican that this is going to happen right before the midterms….Nothing gets the right more riled up then Supreme Court Justices. The Democrats since they are so happy about their chances in November should wait until after to get a COPMMUNISTS ON THE BENCH….After they add to their totals in the Congress and the Senate they should easily be able to get a Communists on the bench…Just wait demoshits…..LOL…..WAIT
