President Trump’s Answer to School Violence

The School Safety Commission has recommended that school districts seriously consider arming teachers to fight against school shooters. The Chicago Sun Times reports:

President Donald Trump’s school safety commission on Tuesday proposed a rollback of an Obama-era policy that was meant to curb racial disparities in school discipline but that critics say left schools afraid to take action against potentially dangerous students.

The panel, led by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, made the recommendation in a report that lays out dozens of suggestions to improve safety in America’s schools. Trump created the commission in March following a Parkland, Florida, school shooting that killed 17 students and staff members.

The report covers areas ranging from mental health to the regulation of violent video games, but it makes relatively few recommendations on gun regulation, an area that many had expected the panel to tackle.

On the question of whether schools should arm staff members, the panel said it should be left to states and schools to decide, but DeVos said she urges schools to “seriously consider” the option. The report highlights districts that have armed teachers, and it points schools to federal funding that can be used for firearm training.

After the colossal fiasco in Broward county, where police officers were on the scene but did not take action against the shooter, arming teachers could be a way to ensure public servants who actually care about children would also be able to defend them.

Schools already have admitted that teachers and even pupils should defend themselves. What I don’t get is why they would limit their arms to canned food and hockey pucks. I served with 17-year old kids who were better with firearms than 90 percent of the nation. I’ve hunted with young teens who were far more careful, safe and accurate than their adult mentors. At Sandy Hook, the adults outnumbered their 112-pound 20-year-old killer by fifty to one! If only four percent of the staff had been armed, that tragedy would have ended before the last shard hit the floor. Some schools are fully awake now and potential killers will seek other targets.

The Cato Institute reported this year that 94 percent of all school shootings occur in public schools where 90 percent of the students are. Only six percent occur in private schools where ten percent of the students are. Several reasons are cited for the differences, e.g., better school culture, size, location, racial composition and percent from low-income families. Private schools are less likely to experience student fighting, bullying and perhaps weapon possession. It’s not known whether private school staffs are armed because few admit it. But most state laws forbid arms on “public” school property and are silent regarding private schools. I’m betting private schools are far better protected than public schools. Location alone often places them in the proximity of other facilities that employ armed security.

With what the schools are teaching our kids today I would have my kids either home schooled or in private school. For example Satan clubs-no way would I approve of that for my child. They also distort our history so much that we older Americans would not recognize it.
