Kansas Votes to Preserve Abortion Rights

In a stunning warning sign for Republicans, the overwhelmingly conservative state has voted down an amendment to its state constitution which would have allowed its Legislature to further restrict or ban abortion.

The referendum is the first in the country since Roe was overturned by the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs.

Dave Wasserman was the first to call the vote for the pro-abortion side.

The measure would have added language to the state constitution saying it does not grant the right to abortion, allowing lawmakers to regulate it however they wished.

Kansas voters are solidly conservative and the state has consistently seen twice as many Republicans turn out to vote in primaries than Democrats over the past decade. Turnout on Tuesday evening was closer to that of a typical midterm election than a primary, nearing 50% turnout.

The vote was closely monitored by the political sphere as a measure of voter feelings toward the nationwide right to abortion being overturned, and the no vote surely sends a deep shock through conservative circles.

Since the ruling, Republican-led states have confidently moved ahead with limiting and banning abortion in most cases. Many of former President Trump’s endorsed candidates have strong anti-abortion positions, taking hardline stances to ban abortion without exceptions for rape and incest.

It remains to be seen if or how other Republican candidates will respond to this outcome as general midterm elections draw nearer.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Has Kansas ceased to be a respectable heartland state? Enshrined killing unborn babies in the State Constitution? Really?

For the past half-century of Roe vs Wade, women of Kansas did not have the government ordering them what to do reproduction-wise, and they are not about to let this freedom-threatening event happen now.

And exactly what does that have to do with murdering the most innocent children whom Jesus Christ loves?

What government would order women in Kansas to become pregnant? Other than rape or incest, becoming pregnant is almost always a decision, especially in this day of condoms and contraception.

The current state constitution doesn’t speak of baby killing. If the amendment is what I think it is, it states that the state constitution can’t be interpreted to allow for baby killing, and it gives the legislature the ability to ban it as they see fit.

You are right about the amendment that failed. It was a court that determined that the State Constitution requires that abortion be allowed, and the amendment that would have stated otherwise left the court’s opinion as the meaning of the Constitution, allowing killing of unborn babies. The vote to defeat the clarifying amendment did indeed enshrine the killing of unborn babies in the State Constitution, as determined by a State Court.

Apart from the born-again Christians there will be no escaping the judgment which is about to fall upon all of the United States for the sins of slaughtering approx. 70 million of the most innocent of all life in the womb of their mothers, and the embracing of every sexual sin there is, and the fire will fall from the East to the West in one night, in one hour, and all the people of the Earth will see the smoke of her ruins rising to the heavens.
God does not send His warnings of destruction to scare the people, His hope is that all should come to the knowledge of His saving grace before it is to late.
There are none so good that they do not need God’s forgiveness, and there are none so bad that God cannot forgive.

If the Republicans hadn’t tried to cheat and lie to get their anti-abortion bill passed, the vote may have been closer. Regardless, I know the decision to maintain abortion as an option was right when I heard on NPR and read in the fact-based news of women whose water broke way too early in their pregnancy for fetal survival being DENIED an abortion to evacuate the dead fetus until the woman showed life-threatening signs of toxins from the baby’s corpse (fever, chills, vomiting). The pregnant woman needs to have a “right to life” rather than government intrusion into their reproduction options.

NPR and Fact based news? This is part of what’s wrong in America. I have been trying to have reasonable conversation/debate with Democrats on this and other subjects. And we always get to a point where I am acussed of getting propaganda from “far right wing news sources”. But most of my argument is based on simple common sense and history, they may not agree with it but it is not propaganda. When I try to point out that their news sources could also be considered propaganda, well, they don’t want to play nice anymore. If we cannot have civil discourse around these subjects, they will never be resolved.

Walt: We now have a “pill” that can shrink fully grown people into embryo’s. Lets shrink those who adore abortion and then abort them.

NPR is taxpayer subsidized government propaganda. They print what the government wants them to print. Of all places to claim are objective, you might as well have chosen CNN.

Not to mention it doesn’t add up: you specifically said the fetus had died. That’s called a miscarriage and has nothing to do with abortion. Removing a fetus’ corpse isn’t an abortion, and there’s no way this would have actually happened because THERE WAS NOTHING TO ABORT.

I am quite sure the Founding Fathers considered unborn babies Americans as well, with a right to life. If I were a mother-to-be I could NEVER kill a little creature growing inside of me. My worst night mare would be to die and reach the other side, onlty to meet a precious human soul: ‘Hi Mom. I love you. I’m the little baby you terminated,’

The moms that chose to murder their precious children will be going to the neither parts of the earth. Unless they get saved by grace through Jesus Christ. Highly improbable in most cases.

This was another stolen election as 1000’s of ghost and illegal votes were counted because Kansas allows votes to be dumped into unsecured drop boxes, So I call this a fraudulent vote and it must be revoted once all drop boxes are removed. All votes being done by mail s/b made to be delivered to the registrar office.

My heart is broken that we give so little consideration to an unborn child. It just makes no sense. If a pregnant woman is murdered and her unborn child dies, her murderer is charged with two counts of murder, yet killing an unborn child by abortion is not? At the end of the day it is still murder and I feel hundreds of thousands of little voices crying at the unfairness of it. Who speaks for them? What has happened to our world that we care nothing for a defenseless child? As I said, my heart is just totally broken….

Wow! You fell for the lie! They did not vote to “preserve abortion rights.” They voted to permit unelected judges to make their laws rather than the elected legislature. Foolhardy is a kind description of what they did in this vote.

Maybe this is just what is needed for our party to come back to its senses, and return to informed debate on government policies, and not seeing who can out-trump the next by going even farther off the rails to the right.

The 6 January fiasco was a huge gift to the Left, given to them by the bonehead wing of the conservative movement.

The abortion ruling was another huge gift to the Left, although it was certainly Constitutionally correct. This gave the ‘no-exceptions, let-ten-year-old-be-mothers boneheads another chance to drive the broad middle of the American people back into the arms of the Left.

The wise conservative voters of Kansas did exactly right. Good for them!

While this is big concern, why aren’t the citizens of every state doing something about the illegal invaders, open borders (guess Kansas could care less does not border with Mexico), recession, and many more negative ongoing country wide yet no big voice to this adminstration about it.

We don’t have a right to abortion in the Constitution. We do have a Right to life , Liberty and the per-suite of Happiness in the Constitution.
With all rights come responsibilities. Isn’t it time we retired that worn out slogan–My Body, My Choice. and replaced it with–
My Body, My Responsibility.
