President Trump’s New Tough Tariff Against Turkey

President Trump has been building up pressure against the Turkish government in response to their rising anti-American actions. The Washington Examiner reports:

The U.S. is doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Turkey, President Trump announced Friday as he admitted the relationship with the NATO ally were strained.

“I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar! Aluminum will now be 20% and Steel 50%. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” Trump tweeted.

The Trump administration has implemented broad-based tariffs of 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent tariff on aluminum. The lira continued to drop as Trump tweeted about raising the tariffs for Turkey, by as much as 14 percent against the U.S. dollar on Friday.

The tension between the U.S. and Turkey has increased as the Trump administration has called for the release of Andrew Brunson, a 50-year-old evangelical Christian pastor from North Carolina. He was detained in 2016 after he was blamed for assisting rebels in a coup. He has denied charges that say he engaged in espionage and collusion with terrorist organizations.

Whether the US will escalate this by banning the export of F-35 stealth fighters remains to be seen.

I hope our economy doesn’t go into the toilet with tariffs just over this one person; and who knows the truth? Maybe he was a spy or something.
But Trumps insistence on these actions I think will hurt America worse, and may affect our military bases there in Turkey…

Or… it may make Turkey remember that it is part of NATO, and that its government is suppose to be secular and democratic. Everywhere in the world where a nation that governs itself in a non-Islamic manner borders an Islamic nation – THERE IS WAR. The Islamists would love nothing better than to overwhelm the freedoms the Turks have come to enjoy , thereby taking Turkey back to the Islamic form of government. Trump’s clear statements to Turkey may cause the people to reconsider their country’s slide back into the dangerous dark ages.

Our economy is not tied to Turkish Steel and Aluminum. Turkey will be hurt more by this than we will. If we were tying this to Chinese Steel there would be a Larger impact to us overall. The broad use of tariffs is concerning as simple fiscal policy, but as a stick to bring nations back to the negotiating table it makes sense short term.

Yo there cupcake. Turkish Steel? — Give e a creak. – I was an industrial electrical/millwright contractor for over 30 years. I used to buy steel 30 tons at a tie.Never once did I ever buy a drywall screw made in or with Turkish steel. – Never even knew they mad steel in Turkey, in fact.

If we never import ANY steel from Turkey and don’t sell them an oz it will not effect us even a little bit.

BTW,,,Do you know where the most efficient steel mill in the world is. (ore steel with less man hours) It’s not in Turkey It’s not in China or Russia either. It’s in Cleveland. Our entire steel industry is on track to king of the world. – Terrifs or not we will be able to under cut anybodies prices,,,,and as for quality. Overall nobody EVER made better steel then us since the early 1800s. not England, and not even Krupp in Germany. We are the best and always have been.

Same for Aluminum. Alcoa is happy as hell that Canada has been put out of the picture in our country.
And my inf does NOT come fro CNN or MSNBC. I picked it up where I went to school at Burns and Blood Tech ,,,,and on factory floors where I got burned and and my blood landed.

It’s not like on TV, my friend.

Just be patient. President Trump is sorting out years of one sidedness by past administrations. You should worry more that Obama took the deficit to nearly 10 trillion$

President Trump should also hit European countries that are still doing business with Russia, Iran and North Korea even after they all agreed on the sanctions to these countries. Germany is still importing gas from Russia even after they signed up for the additional sanctions.

This is a wait and see thing. Maybe it’ll work out for the benefit of the USA or maybe not. I am optimistic, because so far Trump has been right on many issues, but the “Hate Media” always seems to promote the doom and gloom. Just wait it out and then see if Trump was right on this. After all countries have been ripping us off for decades. As far as the Turkey issue is concerned, Trump is using economics to force his point. It didn’t have to be that way if Turkey simply let the guy go. What have they got to gain by holding on to him. they certainly have a lot to lose.

There is no trusting any of the European countries these days , sanctions only work minimally and tariffs can be a disaster long term but fair play in the markets is a must if the US is to lift them .

I suspect there is a lot more left unsaid here that we know. Having done two short tours in Turkey I learned one thing about the “terrible Turks”.There is no Turkish loyalty. Most will just go where the money is and far too many were thieves, stealing our equipment whenever possible. Perhaps I go too far here. I’m sure there are SOME honorable men there. WE just never met any of them.

Sanctions are the only way, that President Donald Trump can bring pressure on other countries, without being directly involved with their government. And I works, is our politicians keep their mouths shut, and support him.
—— In 1967-68, as USAF TSGT, on FTD, I managed MAP (Military Assistance Program) for USA, Defensed Department in Air Training Command. I supervised the electric-electronic skills in Avionics, for F102A Delta Daggar Interceptors, and for that whole year, I had the Radar-controlled weapons Systems , flight line chiefs and Instructors, while I oversaw the shorter periods for engines, hydraulics, and other skills, under the 3 other FTD Supervisor, and was also Unit Supply Officer. We learned to observe some don’t-do things, with foreign students, but did not have any real problems. On completion of training in Texas, Greeks and Turks returned to home base in Incirlik, and Athens, where they taught their own students, with a few USA instructors accompanying them, to observe and advise. USAF was getting out of F102 Delta Daggers, to get newer , more capable planes.
—- I transferred in 1978, to Grand Forks, N.D. where I managed FTD to teach Canadians and National Guard on F011 Voo Doo Interceptors, and we sold those planes.
Back in 1967-68, and 68-69, Those countries were allies and we got along find. Cooperated and made many friends. That is not true now, with present Leader in Turkey, who is converting Turkey back to the Muslim , strict systems, and they are having problems with citizens, versus leadership. They are sill on paper as being NATO, but they have problems. President Trump is more effective with handling that, then USA leaders of last 30-40 years, who are appeasers, talkers, talkers, talkers, and believe in ever moving red lines, without punishment. Donald meets them man to man, or man to women, as equals, but being firm in what his agenda is. We have too many who do not know their agenda, other then fattening their own bank accounts.

I certainly don’t know anything about world affairs; but I surely know that God is still in control. Our president is a praying man and seeks God’s advice….it doesn’t get any better than that. President Trump has taken a lot of flack; but, God has made him strong. The Lord Jesus said, ” If the world hates you, remember, they hated Me first.” John 15:18

Turkey is a scary reminder of Nazi Germany.
After the phony coup, President Erdogan who is really a dictator, got rid of all the lawyers Judges and college professors that didn’t agree with him.
The majority of these were executed !
Turkey had a great man in 1920, Mustifa Kemal Ataturk that brought Turkey into the 20th century, Erdogan is destroying all that.
He also supplied ISIS with arms from Libya from Giddaffi’s arms warehouses.
This was the secret that Ambassador Stevens had and that was why he had to be killed in Benghazi.
He started the Syrian Civil War out of a feud between him and Assad.
