Ben Carson: How Trump Is Fixing Welfare

“To unlock America’s full potential, we need a welfare system of opportunity for the 21st century. The executive order signed by President Trump on Tuesday is a big step in the right direction.”

Unlocking America’s full potential

While America is now experiencing record low unemployment, our country still struggles from nearly

record-high welfare enrollment. Too many Americans remain on the sidelines of our economy. Today, a record 28 million able-bodied adults receive Medicaid, a 400 percent increase since 2000. More than 43 percent of all households receiving federal housing assistance are headed by an able-bodied adult. And in 2016, more than 16 million able-bodied adults received food stamps.

Too many of our neighbors are caught in a welfare system that perpetuates a cycle of poverty and breaks the American spirit of work, free enterprise and family. I often wonder what some of my childhood friends could have achieved if our welfare system promoted these fundamental keys to escaping poverty. What new inventions, policy ideas, medical advances, and discoveries never happen because too many languish in poverty?

To unlock America’s full potential, we need a welfare system of opportunity for the 21st century. The executive order signed by President Trump on Tuesday is a big step in the right direction. Our welfare system should be a pathway to self-sufficiency by focusing on work and stable families, giving hope to their dreams and a foundation for their success. We need a dynamic and innovative welfare system for today’s dynamic economy. Furthermore, we need a welfare system that is data-driven and measures outcomes, not just participation. If we cannot measure the true impact of our programs on their participants, we will only perpetuate the cycle of poverty.

Dr. Ben Carson is correct. Those who are on Welfare but have the physical and mental ability to work should if at all possible have a job. Such a waste of mind and talent/abilities as well as a waste of inner pride when they on Welfare allow an opportunity pass them by.

Dr. Carson, you are correct; President Trump now requires able bodied men and women to work for their welfare. Why burden the citizens of this Country with free stuff for those on welfare while hard working men and women must pay for these welfare people.

The worst part of welfare is the waste of opportunity to work for those who can. Dr. Carson pointed out how many discoveries, inventions, medical advances have been lost because so many stayed mired in poverty within the system. Some of those mired in the system are ingenious at manipulating it to get more money for not working. They show that it’s not idle speculation that an Einstein or an Edison has been lost to the world by a welfare system of dependency.

I like the idea of building a welfare system that will some how measure its successrather that just continue to pay our $$ for one thing and another. Big challenge. I hope Dr. Carson can make it happen.

I pray Dr. Carson will look at fraud committed by our welfare system in giving illegal migrants food stamps, phones, rent money, medical and the list goes on. I am witness to the fact that this is happening in my mid-size Washington state home town. Also the unintended consequences of teaching illegal immigrants from Mexico the English language while not teaching American children, Spanish. This began over 25 years ago and now every employee in our city wants its employees to be bilingual. So guess who gets all of the minimum wage and summer time jobs??

our president knows what is right and what is wrong. these people that on welfare, some deserve it but there is more that don’t , these are the one’s that are taught how to use the systems for their own use. these people were taught by the smart ones in churchs how to bent the system for the free ride and not work. why should i work, if you willing to support me ,because you think that for past sins of our forefathers, that is the right thing to do. I personally think that its time for a change and now! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

I’m a true admirer of Dr. Carson, and am very comfortable with his guidance of his department.
Here is a man who lived the poor person’s experience and rose above whatever issues surfaced because he was sure of his destination, no matter the issues along the way. In his medical field of endeavor, he wasn’t just another children’s brain surgeon, he was the best of the surgeons.
A quiet, pensive man, but tested and proven due to his never give up attitude.

I believe people on welfare deserve a chance to achieve the American Dream. While they remain on Welfare, it will never happen.

Even young mothers with young children could work caring for children of mothers who are working other jobs. If everybody who is physically able to work would, it would not bankrupt our nation and would give them the chance for a more productive life. And also, people who cannot qualify for other employment could clear trash from the sides of our highways while training for advancement to a higher paying job. There are many jobs that do not require training. ( Trash along our highways is extreme!)

I agree. I have a 43 year old son who has had 5 strokes. The first one took hone eye. He continued to work. The next 3 seemed to be relatively uneventful. He continued to work. The last one, a few weeks after the stroke, started to take away his speech, his gait and some of his cognitive. It was completely heart wrenching to see. He struggled to continue to work. But, he started to get increased dizzy spells. He was fired from the last job because of it and has now become unemployable. This is what disability is about, truly disabled. As long as we are able bodied and mentally able, we do not belong on disability. Our other son has terrible health and has a small business. He needs a new heart valve eventually because he was born with a bad valve. But, he hopes to continue to work from home. He has tough days and is not employable, but is still working, as he can. It is healthier mentally to work. People may not be able to be full time, but some work, as able, is healthier, especially for young people. I am 65 and I presently work, but will retire to take care of my husband. He has severe health issues. Welfare was never made as a way of life.

Dr. Carson, I am proud of the work you do and support you totally. In Gaffney, SC, I have a friend whose husband has been unemployed for a year. They found it difficult but endured with hope and prayers. After much searching, He found a job, but it lasted only a few months.

He is now back into unemployment with prayers of support.
He has had no encouragement from the work force but continues to search.

I won’ t identify the type of work because I would not want him identified and humiliated by my interference.

Like other said here: those applying for welfare and are able to work should be provided to get a job! Like the old proverbgoes: give a man a fish and he’ll eat for one day; teach him to fish and he’ll eut his whole life! NO welfare for able bodies, but provide him a job!
Us oldtimers now receiving the fruits of our labor are finding ourselves in bad times! Inflation has eaten away at the buying power of SS benefits! 10 years ago when i retired, I figured I get by with the amount. NOT so today! There were a couple of measly cost of living increases that were a tiny fraction of exorbitant inflation and even that minuscule amount was canceled when they decided to not provide it anymore over the last number of years. I have developed some body which prevents me from doing menial jobs to help augment my survival. Trump provided some good tax cits to hard working Americans, but NOTHING for us neglected, ignored retirees. We payed in all our lifes, but the politicians used the SS fund as a slush fund for personal use, instead of having it being invested to grow to compensate for inflation. DISGRACEFULL!!

Dear Dr. Ben Carson,
Thank you for your great sincere work for our nation. Thank you for your incredible honorable Neurologist/ Neurosurgeon work for pediatrics for so many years and kids. I found out about you in 1995 regarding our first daughter with severe infantile spasms from Emory Hospital in Atlanta. Before her full diagnosis they told us about your surgical methods, but her entire brain was affected. I believe all that happens in your life molds you to work in God’s Kindgdom on earth. That is just one of the items that made me love all, be more understanding, a good listener, become a prayer warrior, open minded and know that everyone has a gift and natural skills. I am a strong Republican and Christian. I received a vision from God February 2008 that entails reducing poverty, increasing confidence while improving American economy and businesses. It is all based on God’s timing, which is correlated to business needs, advancement in technology, when America is at the point where it can be implemented which is based on multiple factors.
I am an industrial and supply chain engineer / consultant and inventor. I also have suffered from epilepsy and lupus since age 15 (35 years) and have had 12 successful surgeries. With faith you can conquer so much!
This vision has been advancing over the years and is a complete strategy puzzle. I have it very well documented. It is based on competition, utilizes tax deductions to companies or to volunteer trainers, which when successful in one area, other areas (opportunity zones or circles) will want to get involved and be successful. There is much more to it than quickly mentioned.
I have consulted with so many large companies over the years and I understand all kinds of people, history, change and moving forward.
I have been involved in discussions and write-ups regarding this for years. It’s all about timing.
Feel free to contact me or have someone contact me for information.
I know Trump has the start of a plan and I pray it is a complete puzzle.
I am here to serve in any way necessary and capable for the Glory of God.
Sincerely,
Shelley

If you want to end welfare fraud, end welfare. End Medicaid also. Both make it harder to work.

Fantastic news, Dr. Carson. The welfare system has raped this country for decades. If you don’t work you don’t eat, that’s what the bible says…

Can we now see WHY President Trump appointed Ben Carson to a post which wasn’t simply medical? He was needed for greater, more experienced work , like showing folks how to better themselves, better their environment , better their self-image by working for their own uplifts rather than losing them by inertia. No one can complain to him about how they’re stuck in poverty. He KNOWS what it takes to escape poverty and nothingness!

Dr. Carson is a great voice in Washington and I agree with everything he says. The problem of the welfare system is much deeper and complex than just putting people to work. Some of these people been on welfare for generations. The are (not all) but many of them unemployable. They have no sense of responsibility and no desire to get up in the morning and go to work. A lot of this started when the government ordered that children are not allowed to work. Used to be children had simple jobs and that responsibility gave them a good start for live. Now we have immigrants doing those jobs. Our teenager do not work anymore and college students are supported by their parents. They don’t work to pay for their college, they just borrow all that money. Like I said not all, but many. The other thing is we have now a housing problem where low income workers can not afford simple housing. On welfare they get help. I know in Germany the government built housing with affordable rent. What I am trying to say is that we need to teach the kids some sense of responsibility and not give them everything for free, because that’s how they expect life to be.
